Avatar 3D - James Cameron is back

What an amazing experience!  Last night I was lucky enough to get a ticket to the latest Cameron film, Avatar in all its 3D glory.  Needless to say the theatre was packed and I was stuck in the front row straining my neck to watch this much anticipated film  The 3D affects are truly amazing and night and day from the old 3D movies that I remembered from child hood.  The film had a pretty solid story line with stunning action scenes and fantasy landscapes like none I have seen before.  I higly recommend seeing it in the theatre to get the true 3D experience.

Iphone appstore - a way for developers to make some big money !

I have read alot recently about iphone apps really taking off.  I guess they sell for anywhere from free to ten dollars, I dont have an iphone yet so I cant comment on what apps I like but I know there are some pretty neat ones out there.  I think theres one that turns the iphone into a wind tunnel or something and a silly one that ifart which is like a digital whoopy cushion.. could be fun.  Some of these developers are making a significant amount of money of these app sales and sounds like there has been a boom in the number of people developing these applications.  So much so that Apple has had problems with keeping up with developer applications.  Everyone wants to jump on this band wagon.  Sounds like you need to invest in the developer contract to sell this at the appstore and get approval as well as needing a mac to develop.  Still some people are making millions apparently and start up companies are focusing strictly on developing these applications.  It will be interesting to see how this compares when the android hits the market with its open source idealogy which should make for some intresting phone competition to Apple.  Im still using my Blackberry untill a smaller iphone comes out :P.

New subdomain music.davidblizard.com

Im adding a new subdomain for me to post my favorite music videos from youtube and reviews of music related stuff.  I might start some more subtopics on other subdomains like health and maybe a movie review one.  I figure it is better then posting all my posts under one since they are very unrelated topics.  Well this blog is just an experiment for me so any suggestions let me know.  Im really not taking it to seriously right now and havent put much time into it yet.  I am trying to come up with origional content that I think is worth blogging about and technology news just seems to be me regurgitating stuff thats on /. and digg.  But I will likely comment on a few of the memorable news that I read about.  This main domain will be mostly technology posts for now.  Cheers.

Japan hates the iPhone

There is an interesting article today on wired.com about iphone sales in Japan being so bad that they are now giving the iphone away for free.  It seems there is a few reasons for this including the data plan is really bad and a cultural difference.  Its no secret the Japans technology is far more advanced the its US counterpart, a perfect example of this is their cellphone market.  Popular cellphones in Japan can view TV, video and music, video camera, 5MP camera as well as being great for text messaging.  While over here we favor an easy to use UI and sleek designs over full features and brand names that are popular among peers.  I think it really comes down to a different culture wanting different things for their phones.  However it would be nice to see some more options and more feature rich cellphones available in the US and Canada.

Pirate Bay Trial - “King Kong Defense”

I have been following the Pirate Bay trial on Slashdot and it has been an entertaining read.  By Day 3 half of the charges have already been dropped leaving lesser charges of linking to copywrited material.  It raises many moral and legal issues as well as the technical aspects of how Torrents work.  The Pirate Bay is not hosting any of this copy written material but simply providing an indexing service much like google to track users media files.  Pirate Bay is hosted in Sweden which has far more lax laws in the area of copy writes and there is also some debate that this trial is the result of a strong push from the US and the RIAA.  It is evident that the way we distribute and consume digital media has changed drastically and the music and movie industry is scrambling to control it.

So far the trial is going in the Pirate Bays favour and yesterday the defense rested with the now legendary “King Kong Defense“.  The defense was stating that the Pirate Bay owners have no idea who or what is being uploaded to the site and a user could very well be King Kong in Cambodia.  There are some very interesting and funny comments on /. under this post.

Favorite Digital Wallpaper - shadowness.com

I havent been downloading wallpaper like I used to several years ago but am thinking I should go scouring for some new sources.  One of my favorite digital art sources is shadowness.com in particular the work done by 7shadows.  Links to his work are here.  People are always asking where I get my wallpapers from so I thought I would share.  The screenshot of my fluxbox desktop in one of my earlier posts features one of these wallpapers.  Thanks for the amazing work 7shadows.

Hackers the Classic Cyber Punk Movie

A bit of nostalgia from the classic 1995 movie “Hackers”.  Starring Jonny Lee Miller and Angelina Jolie this was one of the most entertaining cyberpunk movies of all time.  From the digitally crafted shots of the Gibsons file system to the techno lingo it was a blast to watch and still is today.  If you havent seen it yet check it out.  Hackers (1995)

The mainframe computer called a “Gibson” that they hack into is actually a reference to the cyberpunk author William Gibson, author of Neuromancer and the Difference Engine.

Share your Digital Media to your PS3

One of the biggest features of the PS3 at least for me is the ability to share your media library to the PS3 and display it on your TV in full HD quality!  How do you do this ?  Well in my case my media files, music, photos and movies are stored on my linux system.  After some searching around I found a Linux utility, ushare which allows me to do this.  Ushare will allow you to share your media files to the PS3 using the UPnP protocol and act as a media server.  The same thing can be done in Windows Media player if you are so inclined.

The install on Fedora was as simple as “yum install ushare” and then run the server and point it to your media files.  Eg “ushare -c /media”.  You just have to run the “search for media servers” on your PS3 and there you go… all your photos, music and movies on your TV.   Only drawback I found was that using the wireless was too slow and caused slowdown when watching divx movies so I have opted for using a 100 Mbit cable connection which works flawlessly for video playback.  Even dvd playback works fine and loads fast.  A Gigabit LAN would be ideal for this kinda setup but for now I am happy.

Stream your Music Collection to Work

Most of us have heard of Internet radio, podcasting and shoutcast.  These are all methods of streaming audio and video from a central server to various clients.  At work a lot of people listen to shoutcast radio streams because it is convenient.  Well I grew tired of listening to the same shoutcast stations and wanted a way to listen to my music collection which is located on at home.

I found there are several open source Linux and Windows applications available to do this.  The quickest and easiest method for me was Edna.  Edna is a light weight and fast python script that streams your music and allows you to browse your collection through a web browser.

The install process was very simple and took all of a few minutes.  After the install I just punched a hole in my home router to let me in from work and I was off to the races listening to my favorite tracks from home.  Edna dynamically creates a web interface for you so when you download new songs they will show up without restarting the server.  The stream buffers quickly from my shaw cable connection and I couldnt be happier with my new tunes :).

Fluxbox Linux Window Manager

I have always had a passion for customizing my desktops whether it was hacking Windows XP to show custom boot screens or lately being addicted to Linux Open GL Beryl desktops.  After deciding I wanted a more performance orientated experience i have decide to use Fluxbox a fork of the old Blackbox window manager for Linux.  I have to say I am very pleased with the relative ease of use considering its not as intuitive as Gnome or KDE but if you have used Blackbox its got a lot more features built in.  It didnt take too long before I had a desktop experience I could use and grow to love.

The only extras I am using are Eterm for my transparent console and conky for a snapshot of my system stats.  CPU and memory load are a lot lower as expected compared to using the heavy eye candy, Beryl which means I can do more !!  I have 12 workspaces now which is a bit overkill but nice.
